🛳 10 Things Every First-Time Cruiser Needs to Know
Going on your first cruise is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming. From packing to dining to planning excursions, there’s a lot to think about. Don’t worry — I’ve sailed enough times to share the top 10 things every first-time cruiser should know so your vacation starts smooth and stress-free.
1️⃣ Check Your Cruise Price After Booking
Most people don’t realize this, but cruise fares can drop even after you book! If it happens, many cruise lines will give you onboard credit or a partial refund. Set a reminder to check fares every few weeks — it could mean extra spending money for drinks, excursions, or spa treatments!! Which is always a plus!
2️⃣ Book Excursions Directly
Cruise line excursions are convenient but pricey. Booking with local companies at ports often saves money and gives you a more personalized experience. Always check reviews to make sure they’re reliable — and most will get you back to the ship on time. I have booked through Viator and Tripadvisor plenty of times and have never had a issue!
3️⃣ Skip the Drink Package (Sometimes)
Drink packages are tempting, but only worth it if you plan to sip multiple cocktails every day. If not, pay per drink or bring allowed beverages onboard (wine, soda, etc.). Tip: Water, tea, coffee, and juice at the buffet are always free. We always bring a 12 pack of soda and then just have a few drinks each on the days we feel like it. Again we are not huge drinkers, but we usually spend a $200-$300 total on drinks the package for us both would be $800 plus!
4️⃣ Pack Smart
Bring essentials like sunscreen, seasickness remedies, reusable water bottles, and comfy shoes. Buying these items onboard can be expensive. Also, pack a small carry-on with a change of clothes for embarkation day — your cabin might not be ready right away. Bonus tip most people do not know you can ask guest services for first aid and motion sickness medicine if you forget these instead of buying on board!
5️⃣ Cruise Off-Season for Better Prices
If you’re flexible with dates, consider sailing off-season (September, early December, or after holidays). Prices are lower, ports are less crowded, and flights often cost less too. Do be aware of hurricane season the ships will keep you safe but cruises can be canceled or rerouted with little notice.
6️⃣ Understand Dining Options
Most cruise lines have a main dining room included in your fare, plus specialty restaurants at extra cost. If you want to save money, enjoy the main dining room — the food is delicious, and you can try specialty restaurants selectively. Depending on line and ship there is almost always a buffet as well as more included options. Carnival for example includes places like Guys Burgers, Blue cantina, and more! Royal often includes extra places like Sorento’s, Boardwalk Hot Dogs, & more!
7️⃣ Bring Your Own Entertainment
While ships have shows and activities, downtime in your cabin or on your balcony is inevitable. Bring books, tablets, or downloaded movies to relax without paying for expensive onboard entertainment.
8️⃣ Arrive Early & Plan Embarkation
Check in online before sailing and arrive at the port early. Long lines can be stressful, and arriving early gives you time to explore the ship before everyone else. Pro tip if you dont mind getting on ship late wait till around 2pm and there will be hardly any lines! Same with getting off wait till 930am and a lot waiting in lines. Negative for disembarkation you typically have to be out of rooms by 8:30am. However plenty of places to hangout while waiting like the buffet or outside decks!
9️⃣ Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Cruises can be unpredictable — flights get delayed, cabins get changed, or illness can happen. Travel insurance protects your investment and gives peace of mind.
🔟 Keep an Open Mind & Have Fun!
Cruising is all about relaxation, adventure, and creating memories. Don’t stress if things don’t go perfectly. Explore, eat, sip a cocktail, and enjoy the journey — first cruises are unforgettable!
🌴 Final Thoughts
Your first cruise doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning and a few insider tips, you can save money, maximize fun, and feel confident the moment you step on board.
