Top Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas (With Honest Tips & Experiences)

Intro:
Nassau, Bahamas often gets a bad rap as “just a cruise port,” but we were pleasantly surprised by how much there is to see and do here! With the newly renovated port area, beautiful beaches, cultural sites, and fun activities, Nassau is perfect whether you’re on a short stop or a longer island getaway. Here’s our honest take on the must-do spots — plus tips from our trip.

1. Clifton Heritage National Park 🌊

Clifton Heritage was hands-down one of our favorite experiences. We did the snorkeling tour and loved every second! They provide all the gear — snorkels, fins, and life vests — and you swim about 100 feet offshore in crystal-clear water. The underwater life is stunning: schools of colorful fish, coral formations, and even some small sea creatures we hadn’t seen before.

After snorkeling, we joined their heritage tour. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the Bahamas and the local culture, from the loyalist plantations to the island’s unique traditions. This spot combines adventure and history, making it a perfect stop if you want something active but educational.

Lastly we were provided a delicious lunch that we ate on a pretty much private beach that was absolutely breath taking!

Tip: Wear water shoes or reef-friendly sandals — some areas have rocks near the shore.

2. Cable Beach 🏖️

Cable Beach is famous for its soft white sand and turquoise waters, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a more peaceful beach experience. We found that different access points vary in quality. The spot we visited wasn’t great for snorkeling, but it was quiet and relaxing. The view was amazing and the water was so beautiful!

There weren’t restaurants right on the beach, but a few local stands sold drinks and snacks. One memorable moment? A kind gentleman showed us how to make fresh coconut drinks — a small but special interaction that made our visit feel authentic.

Tip: Bring cash for snacks and drinks at the local stands, and watch out for vendors offering excursions — polite decline works just fine.

3. Pirate Museum 🏴‍☠️

If you’re traveling with kids (or just love a bit of pirate history), the Pirate Museum is worth a visit. It’s interactive, with exhibits showing Nassau’s history during the golden age of piracy. There are hands-on areas for kids to dress up and learn about pirate life, making it fun and educational. Bonus you can technically walk to this from cruise port so saves so money on taxis!

Tip: Tickets are inexpensive and the museum isn’t huge, so you can easily fit it in for an hour or two.

4. Margaritaville Resort 🍹

Margaritaville is a lively resort near the port that’s perfect if you want a resort-style experience without leaving Nassau. You can purchase a day pass and enjoy pools, slides, the lazy river, and plenty of food and drinks. It’s fun for adults and families alike — the kids can play while adults relax with a cocktail in hand. We had a blast. There is also a beach area as well where you can do kayaks, paddle boarding, etc. You can walk here from port but beware it was a pretty good walk I think it took us about 15 to 20 minutes with the little ones!

Tip: Book your day pass ahead of time if possible, especially during cruise season, to guarantee entry. Beware of slides for little ones under 6 they don’t look crazy but they are super fast and my 3 year old was petrified!

5. Book a Boat Charter ⛵️

For a more private and customizable experience, a boat charter is unbeatable. You can choose your own route, snorkel in secluded spots, stop at quiet beaches, or just relax on deck. We loved being able to explore parts of Nassau that most tourists never see. The water is incredibly clear, making it perfect for snorkeling or just floating in the sun.

Tip: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof bag for your phone or camera — some charters provide snorkeling gear, but check in advance.

Final Thoughts:
Nassau is more than just a quick cruise stop. From snorkeling in Clifton Heritage to sipping coconuts on Cable Beach, enjoying resort fun at Margaritaville, and exploring by boat, there’s something for everyone. With a mix of adventure, history, relaxation, and fun, Nassau might just surprise you — it definitely did for us!
